Day 1: Xining – Kumbum Monastery – Qinghai Lake – Chabcha
Visit Kumbum monastery, the birth place of Je Tsongkapa. Travel to China’s largest lake, Qinghai Lake, and pass by nomadic grasslands on the way there.
Day 2: Chabcha – Dredzong Monastery – Tsigorthang (Xinghai)
Drive up to the hill next to Qinghai Lake to and take in the view of the surrounding mountains, grasslands, and animals. Next, drive over rolling pastures to visit one of the most sacred monasteries in Amdo and its meditation caves.
Day 3: Tsigorthang – Jyekundo (Yushu)
Drive across grassland and over mountains and visit Tibetan nomads and their yak-hair tent along the way.
Day 4: Jyekundo
Visit the largest mani-stone in the world at Gyegu monastery, a Sakya-sect monastery that was established in the 13th century.
Day 5: Jyekundo
Visit Wencheng temple/Domkar monastery and Batang grassland or do a short hike around the grassland. There is also a small hot spring in this area.
Day 6: Jyekundo – Sershul – Dzogchen Monastery – Manigango
Drive along the rolling pastures and mountains to reach Dzogchen Monastery, a well-known Nyingmapa monastery founded by Pema Rigzin.
Day 7: Manigango – Dege
Drive to lake Yilhun Lhatso and view the scared mountain Chola and its glaciers.
Day 8: Dege
Dege is the unofficial capital of Kham Tibet. Visit Dege Parkang, a traditional printing house where many of Tibet’s Buddhist scriptures are still printed today. Stop by Dege Monastery afterwards.
Day 9: Dege – Pelyul (Baiyu)
Visit Kotok Monastery, a Nyingmapa monastery in Kham.
Day 10: Pelyul – Garze (Ganzi)
Visit Garze Monastery.
Day 11: Garze – Litang
Visit Litang Monastery, which founded by the 3rd Dalai Lama in 16th century. Then, go to see the Mani stone pile.
Day 12: Litang – Xiangcheng
Visit Xiangcheng temple and then head to Napa Lake, where you can see black-necked cranes.
Day 13: Xiangcheng – Shangri-la (Zhongdian)
Visit Sungtsenling Monastery and Peije Monastery.
Day 14: Shangri-la – Lijiang
Visit ancient Naxi town – the architecture is especially noteworthy for the blending of elements from several cultures that have come together over many centuries. Lijiang maintains an ancient water-supply system of great complexity and ingenuity that is still functioning effectively.
Day 15: Depart Lijiang
Leave Lijiang via train or plane.
