Central Monastery
A small monastery nestled in the mountains in central Tibet
The rugged walk from Tsuphu to Yangpachen crosses through several alpine valleys before emerging into the windswept Yangpachen valleys. The trek combines alpine tundra and sweeping mountain panoramas with visits to monasteries, a nunnery, and local nomad tents.

Tsurphu – Yangpachen

Discover the Stunning Beauty of Central Tibet

Starting in Lhasa, visit the great Potala Palace, the holy Jokhang Temple, and the lively Barkhor market. Travel to the Norbulingka Summer Palace and stop by Drepung Monastery and the debating courtyard at Sera Monastery on the way out of town. From Tsurphu Monastery, trek through a green valley crisscrossed with mountain steams and keep an eye out for mountain goats. Stop in a yak-hair tent for tea before crossing over a mountain pass. Look out over the wide open plateau, with cracked patches of tundra below and a deep blue sky overhead. Travel through a few small villages, climb over gently rolling hills, and camp at a nunnery. End the trek at Yangpachen Monastery, which overlooks part of the Trans-Himalaya range.
