When you drive from Xining to Gui’de, after passing through Dzongka Latse pass, then you need to make a dramatically shift of altitude from 4200m to 1800m in the mater of few kilometers. Before reaching down the bottom of valley, you will see the rainbow colored mountains  which is about 10km before reaching to the Gui’de town.  This land formation in Amdo Tibet is very unique on the Tibetan Plateau.

This colored mountain formations called Gui’de Danxia Geopark. There are several places composed by this Danxia Landformation in China including famous Zhangye Rainbow Qicai Danxia Geopark, Fujian Taining, Wuyishan,Wanfoshan.etc.

The Trika Danxia Geopark mostly dominated inside the Akong Gorge. Akong Gorge is located on the north bank of the Yellow River, with mountains on both sides, towering into the clouds. The cliffs have been eroded by hundreds of millions of years of wind and sand, and their shapes are vairy. there are many shapes like animals.

The red rock (mainly conglomerate and sandstone) formed by unevenly cemented layered iron or calcareous layers in the presence of horizontal or gentle, is cut by vertical or high angle joints, and is subject to differential weathering, gravity collapse, and flowing water dissolution , Wind erosion and other comprehensive formations have steep castle-like, pagoda-like, needle-like, forest-like topography.

The fishing release site in Gui’de, Qinghai, Amdo Tibet

If you cross the yellow river bridge in Akong Gorge, there is a fishreleasing site which is a unique for Tibet. Tibetan people got to fish markets or restaurants to buy fish which is meant to go to tables on the restaurants and release them back to the nature in the yellow river.

This geopark offers walking trails in among red and orange hills. Set against the contrasting blue Qinghai skies and teal waters of the Yellow River, this is a lovely spot to spend an afternoon wandering and taking photos, or exploring the peculiar geology of this part of the Tibetan Plateau.
