Saga Dawa Festival – The Holiest Month in Tibet

Saga Dawa is named after a star called Saga, which appears on the 15th day of the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar. In Tibetan, “Dawa” means “month,” so Saga Dawa simply means “the month of Saga.” This sacred month commemorates three of the most important events in the life of Buddha Shakyamuni — his birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana (the passing away of his mortal body) — all of which, according to tradition, occurred on the same day of the lunar year.

Religious Observance

Throughout the month of Saga Dawa, Tibetans engage in virtuous deeds and spiritual practices to accumulate merit. Many take special vows such as:

Nyanney – refraining from food after noon, taking only one meal per day.
Nyungney – abstaining from both food and speech for set periods.

Acts of compassion are common, such as releasing fish or other animals destined for slaughter, avoiding any form of killing, making generous offerings, and fostering peace and harmony. The atmosphere is one of devotion and joy, with variations in celebration style depending on the region and monastery.

The Grand Celebration at Mount Kailash

While Saga Dawa is observed across Tibet, its most famous celebration takes place at Mount Kailash in Ngari. The main highlight is the raising of the Tarboche (Darboche) prayer flagpole, a sacred event attracting thousands of pilgrims. From the town of Darchen, it is about a 40–50 minute walk to the Tarboche festival ground, where the festivities unfold.

As the largest festival in the Ngari region, Saga Dawa draws Tibetan pilgrims from all over western Tibet, along with visitors from China, India, Nepal, and beyond. The unique aspect of this gathering is the harmonious convergence of Buddhist, Bon, and Hindu rituals, all performed in the same sacred space.
