Zhangye, originally called Gan Zhou, is a city in the northwestern part of Gansu province, located in the middle of the Hexi Corridor. The town was part of the Western Xixia dynasty until it was conquered in 1227. Although it’s not as famous as other Silk Road cities like Dunhuang, Zhangye serves as a good stopover when passing through the Hexi Corridor. Zhangye is noted for its production of wheat, rice, and fruits, and it also boasts outstanding tourist attractions like Dafo Si and the Zhangye Danxia Landscape.

Dafo Si (Giant Buddha Temple)
The Giant Buddha Temple houses the largest indoor reclining Buddha in China, measuring 34.5 meters long and 7.5 meters high. The reclining Buddha represents Shakyamuni, making this site a must-visit for those interested in Buddhism. Conveniently located in Zhangye city, it is easily accessible on foot if you are staying nearby.
Zhangye Danxia Landscape
A one-hour drive from the city takes you to this colorful park, known for its unique geological landscape, which is a representative feature of Gansu. Upon arrival, visitors need to take a shuttle bus to access the park. The multi-colored rock formations amid a green oasis are truly spectacular. Each mountain varies in color and shape, making exploration worthwhile. Visiting during sunset or sunrise can add a special highlight to your trip.

Located 65 kilometers from Zhangye in the Sunan Yugu Autonomous Prefecture, Mati Si is known for its grotto art, Qilian Mountain scenery, and unique Yugu culture. According to legend, a heavenly horse once came to drink water here, leaving hoof prints that inspired the temple’s name.

Zhangye is accessible from Xining and Lanzhou, with both routes covering the scenic spots in the area. If you’re planning a Silk Road journey, exploring Zhangye is well worth your time.
