Xining is one of the easiest mainland China cities for entering Tibet because it has both direct flights to Lhasa and the classic Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It is often the most practical place to begin the train journey, since the dramatic high-plateau section starts after Xining.

Direct flights usually take about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes from Xining Caojiapu Airport (XNN) to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA). Xining to Lhasa Train Schedule

The train from Xining to Lhasa is one of the most memorable railway journeys in Asia. It crosses Qinghai, Golmud, the Tanggula Mountains, Nagchu and the high northern Tibetan Plateau before arriving in Lhasa. The journey usually takes around 19 to 23 hours from Xining, depending on the train.
