Chaka Salt Lake: The Mirror of the Sky
Chaka Salt Lake, also known as Tsaka Lake, is located in Wulan County within the Haixi Mongolian Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province. Situated at an altitude of 3,100m above sea level and approximately 300km from Xining via Qinghai Lake, this extraordinary destination takes its name from the Tibetan word “Chaka,” meaning “salt pond.”
After reopening to the public in June 2016, Chaka Salt Lake quickly gained international recognition, earning its place among “Qinghai’s top four scenic destinations” and being rated as “one of the 55 places people must visit” by Chinese National Geographic magazine.

The Landscape of Chaka or Tsaka Salt Lake
The Mirror of the Sky
Chaka Salt Lake has earned the poetic title “Mirror of the Sky” for its stunning reflective properties. Surrounded by mountains, the pristine white lake surface creates perfect mirror-like reflections of the azure sky during clear weather conditions. This natural phenomenon has made it one of the most photographed locations on the Tibetan Plateau.
Visitor Experience
The lake operates as a dual-purpose destination: one section welcomes tourists while the other continues active salt production with a fully operational salt factory. Upon entering the tourist zone, visitors encounter intricate salt sculptures crafted from the lake’s natural harvest. A convenient tourist train operates within the zone, offering scenic rides across the salt flats, though walking to the lake’s center takes approximately 30 minutes.
The shallow, white lake bed has become a signature photography feature, with many visitors walking barefoot across the crystalline surface to capture unique images. The lake’s natural advantages make it a paradise for photographers seeking spectacular shots during both day and night.

Stargazing Paradise
As night falls, the “Mirror of the Sky” transforms into a celestial wonderland. The lake’s reflective surface doubles the star-filled sky, creating an otherworldly experience where visitors feel suspended between earth and cosmos. This astronomical display against the backdrop of the Tibetan Plateau creates unforgettable memories for stargazers and photographers alike.
Best Visiting Times The optimal visiting period extends from June through mid-September, when warm weather heats the salt sufficiently for comfortable walking. During winter months, visitors can enjoy the dramatic contrast of the white salt lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, creating an entirely different but equally stunning landscape.
Environmental Considerations The lake’s popularity has brought both benefits and challenges. While tourism has brought recognition to this natural wonder, it has also created environmental pressures including pollution concerns. The lake was temporarily closed for cleaning and restoration, highlighting the importance of responsible tourism practices.

Travel Recommendations For travelers planning to visit both Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake, a two-day itinerary is recommended:
Day 1: Drive from Xining to Qinghai Lake, then stay overnight in Heimahe Township to witness the lake’s magnificent sunset and sunrise.
Day 2: Continue to Tsaka Lake for exploration and photography, returning to Xining in the afternoon.
Alternatively, visitors can spend the night at Chaka Salt Lake, where accommodation is available, allowing for extended stargazing and early morning photography sessions when the lake’s reflective qualities are at their most spectacular.
Photography Tips The lake offers exceptional photography opportunities throughout the day, with different lighting conditions creating varied moods and reflections. Early morning and late afternoon provide the most dramatic lighting, while nighttime offers unparalleled astrophotography opportunities in one of China’s clearest skies.
