Jokhang Temple – The Most Sacred Place in Tibet
Located in the heart of Lhasa, the Jokhang Temple is widely revered as the holiest site in all of Tibet. At the center of this sacred complex stands the Jowo Shakyamuni—an iconic statue of the historical Buddha, believed to have been blessed by the Buddha himself during his lifetime. For centuries, this statue has drawn countless Tibetan pilgrims from across the plateau. Many make arduous journeys on foot, prostrating the entire way to the temple—a devotion that can take months or even years. Others come daily to perform prostrations in front of the temple or walk around it in meditation and prayer.
While commonly referred to simply as the Jokhang Temple, the site is in fact an extensive religious complex composed of several important chapels and shrines. The main building, Jokhang, houses the central sanctum of Jowo Shakyamuni. Attached to it is the Trulnang Temple, an equally revered space that further adds to the spiritual significance of the site.

Inside the Jokhang complex, a number of chapels venerated by generations of practitioners can be found:
Je Rinpoche Lhakhang (Je Tsongkapa Lhakhang) – Dedicated to Tsongkapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and his eight principal disciples.
Wopame Lhakhang (Amitabha and Medicine Buddha Chapel) – A shrine honoring Amitabha Buddha and the Medicine Buddha, symbols of compassion and healing.
Tuje Chenpo Lhakhang – Home to the sacred statue of the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteshvara, one of the most deeply venerated images of the Bodhisattva of Compassion in Tibet.
Maitreya Temple – Devoted to the future Buddha, Maitreya, who is awaited as the next enlightened teacher of the world.
Othang Gyatso Lhakhang – A lesser-known but spiritually rich shrine among the network of chapels.
Jowo Shakyamuni Lhakhang – The spiritual core of the temple, this chapel enshrines the famous Jowo statue, brought to Tibet during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo.
Beyond these main chapels, the Jokhang complex contains numerous smaller temples and sacred niches, each with its own unique relics, deities, and historical significance. The entire temple pulsates with centuries of devotion, daily rituals, and the ceaseless prayers of pilgrims. Walking through the Jokhang is not only a journey through Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred space—it is a living testament to the enduring spiritual life of Tibet.
