The great golden Buddha above Thimphu, with a meditation hall, forested hills and wide views across Bhutan’s capital.
Buddha Dordenma, often called Buddha Point, rises above the southern approach to Thimphu at Kuenselphodrang. The seated figure of Shakyamuni Buddha looks out across the capital and its surrounding hills. It is an especially rewarding stop for travelers interested in Buddhist art, contemporary religious monuments and the geography of the Thimphu Valley.
Completed in 2015, Buddha Dordenma is a modern addition to Bhutan’s sacred landscape. The gold-covered bronze statue is commonly described by Bhutanese tourism sources as approximately 51.5 metres tall. The project contains 125,000 smaller Buddha images, connecting the monumental outer form with a much more intimate world of devotional craftsmanship.
Bhutanese accounts associate the project with prophecies and aspirations for peace and well-being. These belong to the site’s religious tradition. For visitors, the most useful approach is to ask how the image is understood by practitioners, rather than treating the monument only as a record of size or engineering.
The large meditation hall beneath the Buddha forms an important part of the complex. When access is available, allow time to experience the religious space as well as the outdoor terrace. The shift from the broad, open hilltop to the quieter interior changes the pace of the visit.
Outside, look back toward Thimphu to see how the capital follows the valley between wooded slopes. This viewpoint is a good introduction early in a stay: places visited later in the city become easier to understand within the wider landscape. Clouds and changing light can alter the view considerably, so clear panoramas cannot be guaranteed.
The surrounding Kuenselphodrang area also offers opportunities to spend time outdoors. Travelers wanting a longer outing can ask about the Changangkha–Buddha Point walking route, which Bhutan’s Department of Tourism lists as a short hike of roughly one and a half to two hours. Walking time depends on the chosen direction, pace and conditions.
Keep the hilltop visit and a forest walk as separate choices when planning the day. A short sightseeing stop should not unexpectedly turn into a hike for companions who prefer an easier schedule. Carry water and wear shoes suitable for the route if walking is included.
We recommend setting aside about 45–60 minutes for the monument and viewpoint, longer for prayer, quiet observation or a walk. It is reached by road from Thimphu, followed by walking around the complex. Check current hall access and any ceremony-related restrictions with your guide.
Dress respectfully and follow local instructions about removing shoes and photographing interiors. The open terrace can feel cool or windy even when the city is comfortable. Travelers who need step-free access should confirm the available route before visiting.
Include Buddha Dordenma in a relaxed Thimphu day with the Memorial Chorten, crafts or textile collections, and Tashichho Dzong. Allow each place enough time to reveal a different aspect of Bhutan: personal devotion, skilled craftsmanship and the relationship between religion and public life.
