Huangnan Tibetan Prefecture | Rebkong | Tongren
Rebkong (Tibetan: རེབ་གོང་། / Chinese: Huangnan Tibetan Prefecture) encompasses the region south of the Yellow River in Qinghai Province. With its administrative seat in Rebkong/Tongren County, located 180km south of Xining City, this significant prefecture serves 280,000 residents, of whom 80-85% are Tibetan, with the remainder comprising Han Chinese and Hui ethnic communities.

There are four counties under the jurisdiction of Huangnan Tibetan Prefecture.
As one of Amdo’s major Tibetan cultural centers, Huangnan Prefecture preserves authentic Tibetan traditions while showcasing the region’s remarkable ethnic diversity. The prefecture encompasses four distinct counties, each offering unique cultural and geographical characteristics.
1. Rebkong/Tongren County Nestled in the Golden Valley of the Rongwu Guchu River, Rebkong sits at approximately 2,600m (8,500 feet) above sea level. This north-south extending valley, surrounded by protective mountains, has earned international recognition as a center for Tibetan traditional arts and cultural preservation.
The valley is home to hundreds of renowned artists living in monasteries and villages scattered around Rongwu town. The most celebrated artistic centers include Rongwo Gonchen Monastery, Senggeshung Yago and Sanggeshung Mago (known as Upper and Lower Wutun Si), Gomar Gompa, and Nyamtok village. These communities have maintained centuries-old traditions of thangka painting, sculpture, and religious art that represent some of the finest examples of Tibetan artistic heritage.

2. Gyantsa/Jianzha County Located on the Yellow River’s southern bank, Gyantsa lies 115km south of Xining and 60km north of Rebkong. At an elevation of 2,063m (6,768 feet), it holds the distinction of being Huangnan Prefecture’s lowest county.
Jianzha serves as the gateway to the famous Kanbula National Park, one of Qinghai Province’s premier travel destinations renowned for its dramatic Danxia landforms and pristine forests. The county also houses significant religious sites, including Lhamo Dechen Monastery and the ancient Lor Dorje Drak meditation caves, where hermits have practiced for centuries.

3. Tsekog/Zeku County Situated 95km southwest of Rebkong, Tsekog borders Henan County to the south and Tongde County to the west. As Huangnan Prefecture’s highest settlement, the region averages 3,850m above sea level, with the main town positioned at 3,660m (12,010 feet).
Tsekog’s vast grasslands come alive during summer months with scattered nomadic tents, yaks, and sheep creating a quintessential Tibetan pastoral landscape. The area offers authentic opportunities to experience traditional nomadic lifestyle. Hor Monastery, located at Tsekog’s western edge, features an impressive long Mani stone pile and serves as a spiritual center for the local nomadic communities.

4. Sogdzong/Henan County Located 50km west of Tsekog, with Machu County in Gansu Province to the south, Sogdzong presents a fascinating cultural blend. The town’s residents are said to descend from mixed Tibetan and Mongolian heritage – “Sogdzong” literally means “Mongolian town” in Tibetan.
Despite this Mongolian ancestry, the community has fully adopted Tibetan culture, language, cuisine, and dress. The region’s southeast hosts a major monastery famous for its annual Monlam Prayer Festival, a spectacular celebration featuring elaborately dressed nomads, traditional monk mask dances, and giant thangka displays that attract visitors from across the Tibetan plateau.

Cultural Significance Rebkong/Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture stands as one of Amdo’s most culturally significant regions, successfully preserving authentic Tibetan traditions while embracing the area’s ethnic diversity. The prefecture serves as a living museum of Tibetan culture, where ancient artistic traditions, nomadic lifestyles, and Buddhist practices continue to thrive in their original forms, making it an essential destination for understanding the depth and richness of Tibetan civilization.
