Itinerary:
Day 1: Xining – Kumbum Monastery – Qinghai Lake – Chabcha / Gonghe [3200m]
In the morning, drive to Kumbum Monastery, located 25km west of Xining. After spending about 2 hours exploring its ancient halls and butter sculptures, we take the scenic route to Dzongkar Lhatse to enjoy the first views of the Tibetan plateau. Then continue south to Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China. Later, drive into the hills above the lake for a breathtaking sunset view. Overnight in Chabcha or Gonghe.

Day 2: Gonghe – Mount Amnye Machen [4100m]
Start the day with a drive to Mount Amnye Machen, the most sacred and highest peak in Qinghai. The 340 km drive takes around 6 hours, with scenic stops to enjoy wildlife and vast landscapes. Upon arrival, we set up camp at the base of the snow mountain to witness sunset and, the next morning, sunrise over this revered peak.
Optional: Stay an extra day to hike and explore the surrounding area.

Day 3: Mt. Amnye Machen – Ragya Monastery – Gui’de [2205m]
After sunrise, we drive to the north side of Mount Amnye Machen, one of Tibet’s most sacred mountains, said to be the residence of protector deity Machen Pomra. Pilgrims from both Buddhist and Bon traditions circumambulate this peak. Then we head toward Gui’de, visiting Ragya Monastery and stopping by dramatic red clay canyons along the way. Overnight at the Yellow River in Gui’de, the lowest altitude town in Qinghai.

Day 4: Gui’de / Trika – Kanbula National Park – Achung Namdzong Nunnery – Shachung Monastery – Xining [2200m]
Today’s journey takes us to Kanbula National Park, where the red clay cliffs transition into forested hills. Visit Achung Namdzong Nunnery, nestled in a remote valley, and the mountaintop Compassion Buddha Temple. Drive past Tibetan villages and a striking turquoise reservoir formed by a hydro dam. Continue to Shachung Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Qinghai, known as the place where Lama Tsongkhapa received his first monastic vows. Return to Xining in the evening.
