Namtso Lake

Yak horns resting on a pile of prayer stones at Namtso

Namtso, translated as "Sky Lake," or "Heavenly Lake," is a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by snow mountains. Its beauty is only paralleled by Yamdroktso, another high-altitude lake said to be part of the life-spirit of Tibet. This trip takes us to historic sites of Lhasa and sacred bodies of water, including Namtso and Yamdroktso.

Sacred Cities and Heavenly Lakes

From Lhasa to Namtso Lake via Gyantse and Shigatse

In the sacred city of Lhasa, visit the grand Potala Palace, the holy Jokhang Temple, and the colorful Barkhor Square. Watch monks debate at Sera Monastery and join pilgrims in exploring the temples and prayer halls at Drepung Monastery. From Lhasa, drive to the town of Gyantse, stopping at the stunning, turquoise Yamdrok Lake along the way. In Shigatse, visit Tashilunpo Monastery and see the giant Buddha. Next, pass by the misty Yangbachen hot springs and on to Namtso, a pristine lake surrounded by snow mountains. On the way back to Lhasa, pass by blooming rapeseed fields and snow-capped mountains.
